IT Conversations [1] 的 Doug Kaye 说

[3] http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/

Doug [4]
ITC。

Summary of my voice mail:

What the Chinese volunteers would
like to offer if ITC stays with CC

English language is the barrier for
most Chinese. But one shouldn't
underestimate the influence of ITC
among entrepreneurs, engineers,
researchers, students or people like
me who just curious about a lot
things. The message spread by ITC
has been and will be filter down to
other audience who have limited
English proficiency.

If ITC stays with CC, I am offering
to :

1) have a audio commentary of EVERY
ITC program for free and released
under CC

2) write a Chinese summary of most
ITC program for free and released,
of course, under CC

3) audio commentary / alternate /
simultaneous interpretation of my
fave ITC programs for free

4) translation of the ITC
transcripts

I am sure there will be many
volunteers to help me with this, so
I am confident with accomplishing
first 2 tasks in a relatively short
time.

What you gonna volunteer for ITC if
it stays with CC, other Chinese
listeners. Please let Doug know.

Why stay with CC

1) why you want somebody else to
   host your file?

First a personal case: in the
mid-Feb, I think for one week, I
have very slow connection to the ITC
server. All download attempts failed
because of timed out multiple times
(believe me I tried very hard to get
my fave "radio program") both at
work and home. That's the single
case I had trouble of downloading
ITC, other than that, the speed is
just great! In that particular
situation, it would be a good idea
if I can try a mirror site partner
with ITC.

Below are some hypothetic scenario
(I didn't know any run across a site
that hosts ITC programs):

Some users don't have access to
internet, some do, but it costs a
fortune. For example, most
universities in China are on CERNet
(china education and research
network). It costs the students a
lot of money to download files
directly from the internet and the
connection is very slow. It would be
good to strike a deal with the
re-distributor (if they were any in
CERnet) than sending them take down
notes. Because I think most
distributor would like to help and
will cooperate.

I download ITC programs at work and
carry/burn them to CDR to carry them
home. cos internet connection at
home is slow. (Well, by doing so,
ITC just lost one download count,
sorry.) When I recommend specific
ITC program to friends, I would send
them link and my personal
comment. But when they really like
it and want to hear more, I think
it's natural for me to burn them a
CD with all my faves of ITC. I would
feel bad about myself when I do the
above mentioned two things when I
know burn CD for myself and friends
would mean less income for Doug,
thus less ITC programs. And maybe,
in a paranoid case, have to defend
such doing as fair use in court? :)

It eliminates the possibility of
sharing ITC programs on a p2p
network, which is the greatest way
to distribute large amount of files,
e.g, when I want to catch-up with
all the ITC program in 2003.

2) Does change the license help?

There are, maybe it's not the case
in the US, tons of unauthorized
sharing of copyrighted work which
their copyright holders (e.g RIAA
MPAA) don't permit such activity and
taking active steps to crack them
down. But, it doesn't do much and it
doesn't do **AA any good. I
seriously doubt the effectiveness of
changing the license to the ones
used by RIAA/MPAA would help ITC in
having a PERFECT control over it's
distribution.

I don't know how to solve your
dilemma, others must would come up
with creative ideas.
